How much should I feed my basset?
watercolour_iris asked:
I have a 1 year old basset hound who weighs about 35 lbs. Right now she’s at a healthy weight for her size (for a basset she’s pretty petite), but I know that you have to watch bassets carefully, and lately she seems to be filling out a little. I’ve always let her eat whatever she wanted as a puppy, but now that she’s older I want to make sure she gets the right amount of food - not too much or too little. Does anyone know of a good way to measure a dog’s food? Do you go by their weight? Thanks!!
I feed her a high quality natural food - organic, no fillers or artificial coloring, etc. I don’t see any charts or feeding instructions on the packaging though. Does anyone who has had bassets know a good feeding standard to keep them healthy?

Feed the amount for her weight as recommended by the food.

I have a 7 month old male Basset pup at around the same weight and I feed him two cups in the a.m. and 2 cups in the p.m. of dry food. Nutro Adult Lamb and Rice is what I use. He is starting to fill out also. He was quite thin when I got him. I stopped using puppy food about a month ago. This is my second Basset. Our first was female and she lived to be 11 1/2 years. Make sure you Basset does’t get too fat. The amounts that I feed my dog might not be what is correct for your’s. This is just what I am doing for right now and he is doing very well both weight and health wise.
