are petite clothing sizes bigger than regular clothing sizes?
caraibes_cate asked:
i’ve checked the Gap’s petite guide and it said “your Gap size = your Gap petite size,” but their size guides indicate that a regular size 4 corresponds to a petite size 6.
ok obviously i’m talking strictly about the numerical sizes, not the size of the clothing itself… i know the clothes themselves are smaller, but i’m talking about sizes in Regular department and Petite department.

In most stores, petite and regular sizes are the same measurements, just the lengths and inseams vary and the regular sizes will perhaps run from a size 0 to a size 14 and the petites will run from a size 00 to a 12.
But in some stores, even if the regular and petite sizes both have the same measurements, the petites are labelled with a bigger size then the regulars, i.e. a regular size 4 equals a petite size 6. In this case the range of sizes should be the same for both regulars and petites, i.e. 0-14.
Hope this helps.

Petite clothing has a shorter leg length, a shorter waist length (waist to crotch) and it all depends on the manufacturer, style, price and your height.
I’m a petite, 5′1″ and wear petite clothes. And depending on the 4 guidelines above, I can fit into 3 different sizes.
My friend is 5′2″ and can wear petite and regular, depending on the style and manufacturer.
I never buy clothes on-line or from catalogs, because they never fit correctly.
Gap’s size 6P could be equal to Macy’s size 4P or 8P.
Besides, trying on clothes is half the fun of buying them.
