Advice and Information for Petite Women

petite ladies having ‘BIG’ babies?

Nat asked:

Hie ladies! Hope you’re all well!

Okay, firstly: i’ve had 4 scans @ 12 weeks, 16 weeks, 20 weeks and 23 weeks. 1st Scan @ 12 weeks showed baby size was as expected, due date only moved 2 days early conpared to LMP due date. 16 weeks, baby was expected size as well. At 20 weeks scan, baby measured almost 2 weeks ahead of his ‘expected size’ (lol) and scan at 23 weeks till showed baby was bigger than his ‘age’…

Now, does this mean that baby is ‘big’ or that he’ll come earlier???

To add, im 1.54m (5.05 feet). I have wide hips (in my opinion). Doc hasnt said anything to me about it but i’ve heard all sorts about short/petite women and vaginal births not being easy… What is your opinion from experience or knowledge of someone you know?

Being told my baby is big, i’d rather it mean that his due date moves up…? lol And my mind is pretty set on having a normal vaginal delivery…

Thank you for reading and for your answers!

my best friend is 5′2 and weighed 100lbs pregnancy, she had a 9lb baby vaginally without a problem. My mom is 5′1 and had all of her babies without any problems vaginally.

As for the size, talk to your doctor about what it means but sizing can be very wrong on an ultrasound.

Yes, my daughter was 9 lbs and 21 inches long. She wouldn’t come out, so I had to have an emergency c-section. I’m 5′2, but her father is a big guy. She also stretched my stomach WAY out and I have some extra skin that I can’t get rid of by just doing stomach crunches.

    Create a video blog…instantly.

I am 51 and I asked my doctor about this he says that if the baby gts up to 8lbs that i will do a c-section, just to make sure that the baby and I are ok, it is very hard and stressful on the mother and baby when the baby is too big for the mother to have normal. Just ask your Dr. he will most like to a c-section if you ask.

im smaller then u are. im about 5′3. i dont have big hips. and before my pregnacy i weighed about 105-110. i thought the same thing and i asked my docter about it. he said that i could have some difficuiltys with a vaginal birth. he said if i want vaginal birth then i will be in labor longer and have alittle bit more pain then usuall.

my baby is big because my husband nick is about 6 feet tall and hes muscular…like his whole family. exept his mom. his mom had 5 prgnacys and 4 kids. shes small too. and only one baby died during her pregnacy cuz of that

good luck. and ask your docter. i only have to more months so wish me luck!!

The scans closer to the due date are not as accurate. I can think of two moms whose scans just three days before birth, showed the baby to be almost 1 lb. heavier than it was.

Your ligaments on your pelvis opening will stretch during the birth. Especially if you squat. That enlarges the opening by 30%.
The best thing you can do is to remain in an upright position during labor. This will help the baby get into a good alignment in the birth canal. Use a birth (exercise) ball. Bring your own to the facility. Some hospitals have them. And spend a lot of time in the shower. This will help you relax and feel less pain. Labor will go quicker.
Your mind is a powerful tool to a great delivery. You are already on your way to the kind of birth experience that you desire.

The one thing that you should ask your doctor is the position of the baby. Head down is important. And then is the baby facing your back or your front or side. The baby’s back should not be facing your back. If it is there are exercises you can do to try to get the baby to turn around before labor. That way you can avoid back labor. One thing you can do now is to have good posture and to not slouch backwards when you sit on a couch. The baby’s head is the heaviest part of its body and slouching will cause back labor. Sit up straight!
