It is for the same reason why shoe stores put the size 5 or 6 on display, they think it looks better. The average size of a model is a 4, so most likely your seeing size four models running around smiling on those GAP ads. It never really bothered me, but maybe should write GAP a letter?

It's all about sales. These companies want the most "conventionally attractive" people to be seen wearing their clothes, the fact that this sets unrealistic targets for the majority of the population means nothing to them when they're all snapping up the latest clobber like hot cakes.

If they were to show an average sized model wearing the clothes then sadly, less people would buy them because they aspire to be stick thin like the waifs in the ads around now.

Lets be honest. Most people that are larger, don't see themself as being that big. It is an advertising plan to make people think they are smaller and what they look like. In reality most people don't want to see themselves as that large.

Because they know how most Women think. They know that by showing attractive well built people wearing their clothes that it will sell better. It makes Women think that if they buy those clothes that they too will look cute just like the Models. Of course that is a generalization on my part. Not everybody is the same. I would say with a fair amount of belief though that this is true for the most part. If they had fat sloppy models modeling their clothes a lot of people would be less inclined to purchase them.
